Two Powerful Types of Music to Help You Sleep
Music to help you sleep— does it exist? Many of us can relate to getting some shut-eye while relaxing music plays in the background. Is that just a coincidence, or does music actually contain certain properties in it which can help you sleep? If that's the case, then can you intentionally induce sleep by listening to music? Those are just some of the questions we aim to answer for you here in this post.
Data Says Yes, But it Depends...
Data suggests that you can use music to help you sleep, but it depends on what kind of music. It's unlikely that hard rock or up-tempo dance music will help put you to sleep any quicker; but it's possible that music with a lower tempo can help you drift off into dreamland. Classical music tends to have just the right balance.
Worldwide studies support the notion that you can use music to help you sleep. It has even been backed up by studies of studies. Men and women, young and old, can use music to help them sleep. This is true for people with either chronic or short term sleeping problems.
In these studies, people listen to music with a tempo of about 60 beats per minute (BPM) for about an hour before they go to bed. It has been shown that listening to this music helps to slow a person's heart rate down to about 60 BPM, which is the ideal range for falling asleep.
When looking for music for sleep, stay away from anything too fast, too heavy, or too emotional. If there are certain songs that invoke strong emotions in you, either positive or negative, it's best to keep those out of your nighttime rotation. Again, classical music is shown to be among the most powerful types of music to help you sleep.
If you have already exhausted these options and they have not been successful for you, there are other options which we will explain in the next section.
Want Music to Help You Sleep? Try Binaural Beats
Did you know there is music that has been composed for the specific purpose of helping people sleep? Binaural beats can be used to tune your body into almost any state of mind; but for the purpose of this article we'll just discuss how it can be used to create music for sleep.
Binaural beats work by having two different frequencies delivered separately to each ear. This causes your brain to hear a third frequency, which is the difference between the other two frequencies.
The third frequency created by your brain has a similar effect of tuning your internal rhythm to a particular beat, which can help you fall asleep. You need to wear headphones in order for this to work, otherwise there would be no separation between the beats.
The problem with that is... who wants to wear ear buds or traditional headphones to bed? We solved the problem by creating SleepPhones®, the most comfortable headphones for sleeping. To thank you for being a SleepPhones® customer, we offer free binaural beats on our website, which you can download here.
Whether you use binaural beats or music for sleep, we wish you many restful nights in the future. Sweet dreams!
