Governor's Export ImPAct Award 2014 (2014 GIA)

Dr. Wei-Shin Lai is honored with the 2014 Governors Export Impact award

2014 Governors Impact Award: Dr. Wei-Shin Lai is honored with the Export Impact award

AcousticSheep won a seat at the governor's table and another ImPAct Award—this time, in the export category. "This award is given to a company that has significantly increased its export sales and the number of new foreign markets it sells to since 2011," the description reads. Indeed, we had been shipping to more than 50 countries at that time.

Export Impact Award Given to AcousticSheep LLC at the 2014 Pennsylvania Governor's Impact Awards

We just won the 2014 Governor's Impact Award for Exports (#imPActwards). It was pretty amazing. I can't believe we won a second year in a row after we won for Entrepreneurship last year. We weren't expecting it, and we're so happy! The Impact Awards are given to the top businesses in five different categories after a nomination process in January. Five finalists are announced in March, and the winner is announced at the end of May.

pennsylvania governer tom corbett at the governor's impact awards

Jeff, I appreciate all of you and your team's hard work to make sure the shipments go out accurately and on time. Lisa and Kristin, thank you for helping our international customers with what they need. They can see that we are friendly and easy to buy from. The rest of our employees (including our new marketing team) are fantastic and will allow the business to ramp up even faster!

Sanat, Sahil, and Dan, I'm very excited about the international markets you have helped us open recently and the amount of business through your channels. I didn't think we would win based on the export sales in 2013, especially when we are now doing so much more in 2014! Richard and Luke, we are looking to you for continued business growth in Europe.

We were one of three companies invited to sit with the Governor. I talked with him about how as a doctor with no business background, I relied heavily on the help of the state-funded free services such as the Penn State SBDC, Seda-Cog, Northwest Commission, and Gannon SBDC to teach us business concepts and how to export our products. The networking and education were critical to our success. He responded and said that he brought the different groups together to make sure business resources were communicating more with each other and to reduce duplication of effort.

wei-shin and jason speaking with the governor of pennsylvania

I also told him my story of how I couldn't sleep after waking up at night and introduced our line of SleepPhones and RunPhones® headphones. He said his wife watches TV in bed, which he doesn't do. So I will be sending Susan Manbeck Corbett a SleepPhones Wireless with a Bluetooth transmitter set, which will be released for the holidays this year. Apparently he mentioned our story to other people as he was walking around. People were asking about our products after the event.

Jason talked to him about his son who will be opening a new branch for EA Software (the huge video game company) in Pittsburgh. I think he is proud of his son. We also talked about education and how important it is to grow a strong economy. He said that Pennsylvania produced 12,000 teachers annually, and the State only needs 3000. He also said that guidance counselors need to guide kids to trade jobs, not just college. We agreed that there are too many teachers. In fact, we have three employees with teaching degrees.

Prior to the dinner, we were interviewed by a PR firm producing a video to sell Pennsylvania as a place to grow your business. I wish I did a bit better for that interview, but I think it was good enough for the short sound bites they needed. They said they will be visiting us in Erie to take some B-roll footage too. It will be exciting for us to be featured on a video about PA businesses!

the sleepphones team poses with the governor of pennsylvania

We had a great time with our table-mates (Laurel Mueller of Soil Services Company and William Hindle of Hindle Power) who all won, talking with the Governor, and making connections.

Thank you Noelle (from Seda-Cog) and Linda (from Penn State SBDC) for nominating us and writing such a glowing description!

Exporter of the Year 2020

The Export-Import Bank of the U.S. (EXIM), the federal government's official export credit agency, helps American businesses like us compete in global markets. Because a quarter of our sales from 2017 to 2020 came from international markets, EXIM gave us an Exporter of the Year award. Only 12 other businesses received this honor.

ERIE, PA — September 11, 2020: AcousticSheep LLC, the Erie-based company that invented the world’s first and most comfortable headphones for sleeping has been named an Exporter of the Year by the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM). The company has used EXIM’s export credit insurance to bolster international sales and expansion since 2017, and was honored during EXIM’s annual 2020 conference, held virtually on September 9-11, 2020.

AcousticSheep was among 12 other small businesses chosen for the award, representing a cross-section of American innovation and industry sectors. AcousticSheep began using EXIM’s export credit insurance in 2017 to protect against the risk of nonpayment, and has enabled the company to both increase existing exports and expand into two new countries.

"EXIM has given us the confidence to work with new distributors in more risky countries as well as expand our sales to existing distributors, giving them more credit — and increased sales — over time,” said Dr. Wei-Shin Lai, AcousticSheep’s CEO. “We used to worry about doing enough due diligence on international partners or asking them to pay up front. Now, we are still careful, but we know that EXIM has our back if anything goes wrong."

AcousticSheep is a minority- and woman-owned business based in Erie, Pennsylvania with exports currently accounting for 25% of the company's sales.

About AcousticSheep

AcousticSheep was founded by Dr. Wei-Shin Lai and Jason Wolfe in 2007. Wei-Shin Lai, a family physician, couldn’t get back to sleep after taking patient calls at night. Her husband, Jason Wolfe suggested she listen to binaural beats in order to fall back asleep, but regular headphones and earbuds were uncomfortable. To solve this problem, they decided to make the first headphones designed specifically for sleeping. He soldered and she sewed the first “headphones in a headband” at their kitchen table and called them SleepPhones®.

More than a million SleepPhones® have been sold to date, and Jason and Wei-Shin have earned recognitions such as Entrepreneur of the Year in PA (SBA), Entrepreneur of the Year in Western PA & WV (Ernst & Young), and Small Business of the Year with the Consumer Technology Association. Their products have won eight Consumer Electronics Association Innovation Awards, two Pennsylvania ImPAct Awards (Entrepreneur and Exports), and a Red Dot Design Award.
